The Ayrshire Road Run is a two-day event organised by the Ayrshire Commercial Vehicle Club. Held in early July, the Run starts with a morning rally on Ayr's Low Green, a large open area on the seafront. Before setting off on their 250 mile route through South Ayrshire and parts of Dumfries and Galloway the entrants parade through the centre of Ayr.
The rally and the early part of the Run were blessed with great weather but by mid-afternoon on the first day heavy was lashing down and by late evening it turned to a howling gale. Those entrants sleeping in their vehicles on the seafront at Portpatrick had more than a few anxious moments during the night but by morning the rain had gone.
Once again there were `new' vehicles on display with Frank McDougall's ex-Johnnie Walker Albion Victor stealing most of the limelight. This vehicle had not been on the road for at least 40 years. Ian Murdock's beautifully restored 1976 Atkinson Borderer was also on it's first Ayrshire Run.
Unobtrusive commentary by JIM WILKIE.
